Ian McKellen earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of James Whale, creator of the first two "Frankenstein" films. Whale was also one of the few openly gay denizens of the Hollywood community who, by 1957, hasn't made a picture in 16 years. The arrival of a handsome gardener (Brendan Fraser) at the Whale estate sparks the interest of the physically failing filmmaker, but a doomed attempt at seduction quickly transforms into a close bond between two men: one needing to talk and the other willing to listen.
