In the early '80s, England's musical center shifted from London to Manchester. Here, following punk's loss of manic energy, homegrown bands like Joy Division and The Happy Mondays ruled. In this dramatic flashback to a brief moment in pop history, Michael Winterbottom tells the story through the eyes of Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan), rock impresario and club owner, as he partakes in Manchester's sudden and improbable rise to rock glory, and the city's sad decline into drugs and despair. "Shines with a kind of inspired madness" - Roger Ebert.
