Bridget (Hilary Swank) returns to her childhood home in Chicago to take care of her ailing mother (Blythe Danner). She has to referee between her father's (Robert Forster) stubborn efforts to hold onto her mother and her brother’s (Michael Shannon) efforts to foist her off. Forced to reckon with a lifetime and family conflict and long-standing resentments, Bridget must face old wounds and reevaluate her familial standing.
