What’s New In May 2024

The Chi (Season 6 Part 2 premiere) (May 10)
Created and executive produced by Emmy®-winner Lena Waithe, The Chi is a timely coming-of-age story about a group of residents living on the South Side of Chicago who become linked by coincidence, but bonded by the need for connection and redemption. The series had a record-breaking Season 6 premiere followed by seven more thrilling episodes that sent its characters careening between the highest highs and lowest lows.

The first half of Season 6 of The Chi focused on Emmett (Jacob Latimore) as he struggled to balance his blended union to Kiesha (Birgundi Baker) with his perilous partnership with Douda (Curtiss Cook) – who, in turn, was dealing with the fallout of Q’s murder and its effect on his inner circle. Meanwhile, Victor (Luke James) worried that his past was starting to impact his new role as city councilman, while newlyweds Jada (Yolonda Ross) and Darnell (Rolando Boyce) feared for their son Emmett after watching him make a desperate, life-threatening move. The cannabis business of Rob and Tiff (Iman Shumpert and Hannaha Hall, respectively), as well as the apparel line founded by Jake (Michael V. Epps), began to thrive, while Maisha (Genesis Denise Hale) fought to get her own career off the ground despite the divided attentions of her manager, Jemma (Judae’a Brown). And Papa (Shamon Brown, Jr.) grappled with the senseless loss of his beloved father.

The second half of the season promises that danger lies in wait, that no one is safe – and that every single character will be tested as never before.

Season 6 guest stars include Emmy® winner Lynn Whitfield, Jill Marie Jones, Kandi Burruss, La La Anthony, Vic Mensa, Carolyn Michelle Smith, Jason Weaver, Iman Shumpert, Nia Jervier, L’lerrét Jazelle, Ahmad Ferguson, Joel Steingold, Miriam A. Hyman, Tyla Abercrumbie, Tai Davis, and Tory O. Davis.

Anything for Fame (May 1)
This is a startling and timely study of contemporary celebrity that ventures into the virtual Wild West to profile a new breed of ambitious – and reckless – content creator. The filmmakers follow these creators as they navigate a ruthless attention economy where likes and views become intoxicating currency.

Mourning in Lod (May 17)
Mourning in Lod is a documentary by the Israeli director Hilla Medalia. It examines the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the stories of three people living in the city of Lod, Israel – people whose fates become inextricably linked in a vicious cycle of violence. The outpouring of love, anger, and forgiveness that follows offers a ray of light, offsetting a collective state of seemingly endless mourning.

Couples Therapy (Season 4) (May 31)
This award-winning docuseries brings viewers into therapy sessions with acclaimed psychoanalyst Dr. Orna Guralnik, showing her deft guidance of couples through the conflicts – and extraordinary breakthroughs – that are typically hidden behind closed doors.

During Season 4, Dr. Guralnik uncovers the past secrets and current blowups of four sets of romantic partners:
- a polyamorous trio dealing with power struggles and hidden resentments;
- newlyweds navigating religious and sexual differences after cutting ties with a critical mother;
- a volatile young couple trying cohabitation for their child’s sake; and,
- a man with dissociative identity disorder, struggling with memory lapses during conflicts with his partner.

Nine episodes of Couples Therapy, Season 4, are available to stream on May 31.

Black Lotus (May 1)
Directed by Todor Chapkanov, this action-packed feature film is about an ex-special forces operative who wages a one-man war through the streets of Amsterdam in order to rescue his friend's daughter from the local crime syndicate. The cast includes Rico Verhoeven, Frank Grillo, and Marie Dompnier.

A Gentleman in Moscow
Adapted from Amor Towles’ internationally best-selling novel, this eight-episode limited series centers on Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor), whose gilded past has placed him on the wrong side of history in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. Though spared immediate execution, he is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room of an opulent hotel, and threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside again. As the years pass and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold beyond the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. Forced to build a life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family, and love.

Alongside McGregor, the series stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Alexa Goodall, Johnny Harris, and Fehinti Balogun. Additional cast members include Leah Harvey, Paul Ready, John Heffernan, Lyès Salem, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Dee Ahluwalia, and Anastasia Hille. A Gentleman in Moscow is produced by Lionsgate Television. The finale drops May 17.
